US tipping norms, and where each rate fits

For sit-down table service in the United States, customary tips run from about 15% to 20% of the bill. 15% is the long-standing baseline — the floor for ordinary, acceptable service. 18% reads as solid, attentive service and is the figure many venues set as the automatic gratuity on large-party checks. 20% has become the modern default that most card terminals suggest first after good table service.

Norms vary by setting. Counter pickup, takeaway, and quick-service orders carry weaker expectations than full table service, and bar tabs are often tipped per drink rather than as a strict percentage. The calculator does not assume a setting — it simply applies the percentage you choose to the bill you enter, so you can match the rate to the situation in front of you.

How the even split works

After it works out the tip and the grand total, the calculator divides the total — bill plus tip — evenly by the number of people you enter and shows each person's share of both the tip and the full amount. That keeps an even split simple: everyone pays the same regardless of who ordered what.

One rounding caveat: per-person figures are rounded to the nearest cent, so the shares can sum to a cent or two more or less than the displayed total. For an exact split, have one person cover the odd cent, or round the whole tip to a convenient number before dividing.

Tipping on the pre-tax or post-tax amount

The tip is calculated on whatever bill figure you type in, so you decide the base. Some diners tip on the pre-tax subtotal, reasoning that sales tax is not part of the service; others tip on the after-tax total shown at the bottom of the check because it is the simpler number to read off.

Either approach is common and the difference is small at normal tax rates. To tip on the subtotal, enter that figure; to tip on the full charged amount, enter the after-tax total instead. The calculator does not add or remove tax — it works only from the number you give it.
